Type A vs Type B uPVC Door Handles — What Is the Difference?

uPVC door handles are categorised as Type A or Type B based on how they attach to the door.

Type A handles (also called inline handles) have a one-piece backplate. The handle is fixed directly through the door with two bolts.

Type B handles (also called offset or pad handles) have a separate backplate. The handle is mounted with screws from the back of the door.

The quickest way to tell: look at the back of your door. If you can see two bolt heads holding the handle on, you have a Type A. If you see screws going into the backplate, you have a Type B.

How to Measure a uPVC Door Handle

Before ordering a replacement uPVC door handle, you need three measurements:

PZ measurement — the distance from the centre of the handle spindle hole to the centre of the keyhole. The most common PZ on UK uPVC doors is 92mm.

Screw centres — the distance between the two fixing screw holes on the backplate. Common sizes are 122mm, 180mm, 190mm, 211mm, and 240mm.

Backplate length — the full length of the backplate from top to bottom.

Replacing a uPVC Door Handle

A worn or broken uPVC door handle is one of the most common home security issues — and one of the easiest to fix. In most cases, a direct replacement takes under 15 minutes with just a screwdriver. No locksmith needed.

How to measure your PZ

This is the B measurement in the diagram: from the centre of the lever spindle to the centre of the keyhole below it. On most uPVC doors this is 92mm.

How to measure your screw centres

This is the A measurement: from the centre of the top fixing screw to the centre of the bottom fixing screw. On some handles the top screw sits above the lever, on others below it — either way, measure between the two screws. This is most commonly 122mm or 215mm.

Two measurements identify almost every handle: the PZ — from the centre of the lever spindle down to the centre of the keyhole, usually 92mm — and the screw centres, from the top fixing screw to the bottom one, commonly 122mm but varying by lock brand. Measure both on your existing handle and match them exactly.

PZ is the distance from the centre of the handle spindle to the centre of the euro keyhole. 92mm is the UK standard on most uPVC and composite doors; 62mm appears on some French doors and older locks. The PZ must match your multipoint lock or the keyhole simply won't line up.
