The gearbox is the central mechanism of a multipoint lock, sitting behind the handles and keyhole. It houses the latch, deadbolt and the gearing that drives the hooks along the strip when you lift the handle. It's the hardest-working part of the lock — and the part that usually fails first.
Three details identify it: the brand stamped on the faceplate (Fullex, GU, ERA, Winkhaus, Yale, Avocet, Mila), the backset — measured from the faceplate to the centre of the spindle hole, usually 35mm or 45mm — and the PZ centre, usually 92mm. With those three, we can match a replacement even for older doors.
Yes, in most cases. Remove the handles and cylinder, unscrew the faceplate section around the gearbox, and the unit slides out of the strip. A like-for-like replacement drops back in the same way. It's a 30–45 minute DIY job and dramatically cheaper than replacing the full strip or the door.
