One handle, three positions: pointing down is locked, horizontal opens the window inward like a door, and pointing up tilts the top inward for ventilation. The handle drives a long spindle into the window's central gearbox.
Match the spindle length (longer than standard espag handles — measure the old one) and the fixing centres, then swap with the window closed and the handle in the same position as the old one was removed. Misindexing the spindle is the only real trap.
The sash has been operated with the handle mid-position, tripping the mechanism so it tilts and turns together. Most gearboxes have a small anti-slam catch to press while returning the handle — a two-minute fix, no parts needed.
