Window Restrictors for Child Safety
Each year, thousands of children in the UK are injured in falls from windows. A window restrictor limits how far a window can open — typically to around 100mm — which is wide enough for ventilation but narrow enough to prevent a child from falling through.
Our range includes hook-style safety catches, cable restrictors with key locks, and fixed restrictors with key release. All are designed for uPVC windows and most can be fitted in minutes with just a screwdriver.
If you are a landlord, window restrictors may be required to meet health and safety regulations in rented and multi-occupancy properties, particularly on upper floor windows. Our key-locking cable restrictors are the most popular choice for rental compliance.
Types of Window Restrictors We Stock
Not sure which type of window restrictor you need? Here is a quick guide to the main styles:
Hook Safety Catches (Releasable)
A spring-loaded hook that restricts the window opening to approximately 100mm. Can be released by hand to allow full opening for cleaning or emergency exit. Fits into the euro groove channel on most uPVC windows. Available in left and right hand versions.
Cable Window Restrictors (Key-Locking)
A steel cable connecting the window sash to the frame, limiting the opening distance. Locked with a key so children cannot override it. Compatible with uPVC, timber and aluminium windows. The most popular option for landlords and rental properties.
Fixed Restrictors with Key Release
A rigid arm restrictor that limits the window to a fixed opening distance. Tested to British Standard 6375 and able to withstand forces over 1000N. Key-operated release for full opening when needed. Our most heavy-duty option.
Self-Adhesive Sliding Locks
A no-drill sliding lock that sticks to the window frame. Ideal for rented properties where drilling is not permitted. Quick and easy to fit with no tools required.
For more detail on choosing between these types, read our guide on how to choose the right window restrictor.
How to Fit a Window Restrictor
Most window restrictors can be fitted as a DIY job in under 10 minutes per window. The general steps are:
Position the restrictor on the window sash and frame, making sure the hook or cable will engage at the correct opening distance. Mark the screw holes with a pencil. Drill pilot holes if fitting to timber, or screw directly into the uPVC frame using the self-tapping screws provided. Attach both parts of the restrictor and test the opening and release mechanism.
