Frequently Asked Questions

It’s a dry, powder-based lubricant designed specifically for high-security cylinder locks (and other key-operated locks). It reduces friction inside the lock, helping keys turn smoothly and preventing sticking, jamming or wear.

Unlike oils or grease, graphite powder doesn’t attract dust, dirt, or grime — so it avoids sticky buildup that can clog lock internals. It also remains effective in varying weather or temperature conditions and won’t freeze or evaporate.

Simply apply a small “puff” of powder into the keyhole (or onto the key), then insert and turn the key several times to work the graphite through the lock mechanism.

For normal indoor use, every 6–12 months is usually sufficient. If your doors/locks are exposed to dust, moisture, or heavy use, you may wish to apply more frequently.

Yes — by reducing internal friction and preventing wear, rust, or corrosion, graphite powder helps maintain lock performance over time and prolongs the lifespan of high-security cylinder locks.

Product overview

Home Secure graphite powder is a fine, dry lubricant for locks. A small puff into the keyhole coats the pins and springs inside, so the key goes in and turns smoothly. Because it's dry, it doesn't attract dust or go sticky like oil, and it keeps working in cold and wet weather.

Why graphite powder for locks?

  • Smooth operation: reduces friction so locks turn smoothly and don't jam.
  • Longer lock life: the fine particles coat the moving parts so they slide rather than grind.
  • All-weather: unlike oil, it doesn't thicken in the cold or wash out in the rain.
  • Safe for high security cylinders such as Avocet ABS and Yale Platinum, as well as padlocks and nightlatches.
  • Easy to apply: squeeze bottle with a fine nozzle that fits the keyhole.

How to use it

  1. Wipe the key with a dry cloth.
  2. Put the nozzle to the keyhole and give one or two short squeezes.
  3. Put the key in and turn it back and forth about 10 times.
  4. Wipe off any excess from the key and the face of the lock.

We recommend applying sparingly every 6 months. Don't use oil or WD-40 in the keyhole: the wet film collects dust and makes the lock stiffer over time. Keep graphite away from smart lock electronics.
