Quick answers
What type of window handle do I have?
If a square spindle goes from the back of the handle into the window, it's an espag handle, the most common type. A hooked spur that catches on a wedge means a cockspur handle, and a window that tilts in at the top is tilt and turn.

Why won't my window lock when I turn the handle?
Open the window and turn the handle. If the cams on the edge move smoothly with the window open but the handle is stiff when it's shut, the keeps or alignment need adjusting. If the cams don't move, the espag mechanism is worn and can be replaced with a screwdriver.

Friction stays or espag: which part has failed?
Friction stays are the hinges: if the window won't stay open, drops or won't close tight, it's usually the stays, measured in inches. The espag is the locking strip in the opening edge: if the handle turns but won't lock, it's usually the espag.

How far should a child safety window restrictor let a window open?
For child safety the window must open no more than 89mm. A cable restrictor takes about 10 to 15 minutes per window to fit: the cable end screws to the window and the lock body to the frame.
