How Much Does It Cost to Get a Key Cut? Prices from £2.80 (2026)

The short answer

At our Aintree trade counter, a standard door key costs £2.80 and a mortice key costs £3.50. High-security keys start at £12 (APECS) and an Avocet ABS key is £14. Get 3 or more of the same key cut and you save 20%.

Lost every key? If your lock is an Avocet ABS or Yale Platinum, we can cut a new key from the code on your key card, with no original needed. Order an ABS key online from £11.99 and we'll post it.

Most keys are cut while you wait, in a few minutes. Here's what each type costs, why high-security keys cost more, and what to do if you haven't got a key to copy.

Our counter tip

Always bring the original key to copy, not a copy of a copy. Every copy adds a little error, and by the third generation it may not turn. And keep your ABS or Yale key card somewhere separate from your keys: it's the only way to get a key cut if you lose them all.

Why do high-security keys cost more?

A standard key is cut from a blank that almost any key cutter can buy, which is why it's cheap. It's also why anyone can copy it.

High-security keys, like Avocet ABS and Yale Platinum, use restricted key blanks. Only authorised dealers can get them, and they're cut on specialist machines. That's the point: nobody can walk into a shop and copy your key without proof that the lock is yours.

So you're paying for more than the key. You're paying for control over who has a copy. That matters if you've moved house, had tenants or had a key go missing.

Lost all your keys?

It depends on your lock:

  • Avocet ABS or Yale Platinum: we can cut a new key from the code on your key card, with no original needed. You can do it in store, or online: we're an official ABS and Yale distributor, so we cut the key in house and send it by recorded delivery. Keep your key card somewhere safe, away from your keys.
  • A standard lock: without a key to copy, the simplest fix is to replace the cylinder. On a uPVC or composite door, it's one screw and about 10 minutes. See how to measure your euro cylinder.

In the last 12 months we cut and posted over 150 ABS and Yale keys from a code alone, for customers all over the UK.

Keys lost or stolen? Think about the lock, not just the key

A new key gets you back in. But if your old keys were lost with your address, or you've just moved in and don't know who has copies, a new key doesn't stop the old ones working.

In that case, change the cylinder. An Avocet ABS cylinder gives you new keys that can't be copied without your key card, and it's TS007 3-star anti-snap. Want one key for the front and back door? Order them keyed alike.

Don't know who has a copy?

Swap to an Avocet ABS cylinder: new keys that can't be copied without your key card. TS007 3-star anti-snap. £44.99.

New key not working?

  • Always copy the original key, not a copy. Each copy adds a little error, so a copy of a copy may not turn.
  • It turns but feels stiff: bring it back and we'll check the cut. If the original's stiff too, the lock needs attention. See our guide to a key that's hard to turn.
  • It won't go in at all: the blank is wrong or the key is upside down. Most cylinder keys only go in one way.

Where to get your keys cut

Our trade counter is at Unit 5, Brookfield Drive, Aintree, Liverpool L9 7AJ, with free parking outside. Most keys are cut while you wait. See our Liverpool key cutting page for directions, or call 0151 521 8089.

Not local? If you have ABS or Yale Platinum locks, order a key by code and we'll post it to you.

Yes, if your lock is an Avocet ABS or Yale Platinum 3-star. We can cut a new key from the code on your key card, in store or online, and post it by recorded delivery. For a standard lock with no key to copy, the simplest fix is to replace the cylinder.

High-security keys like Avocet ABS and Yale Platinum use restricted key blanks that only authorised dealers can get, cut on specialist machines. That means nobody can copy your key without proof the lock is yours, so you control who has a copy.

The most common reason is that it was copied from a copy. Each copy adds a little error, so always bring the original key. If it turns but feels stiff, bring it back and we'll check the cut. If the original is stiff too, the lock itself needs attention.

Most keys are cut while you wait at our Aintree counter, in a few minutes. Keys cut to code for Avocet ABS and Yale Platinum locks ordered online are cut in house and sent by recorded delivery.
